    Motocross Tyre Pressure Guide

    Tyre pressure is the cheapest performance change on a motocross bike, and the one riders get wrong most often. A couple of PSI changes grip, bump absorption and how easily the tyre pinch-flats.

    Set pressures cold, before you ride. Pressure typically rises 1–2 PSI once the tyre is hot, so a pressure that felt right hot will be too low on the next session's first lap.

    Baseline pressures by surface

    These are starting points for a standard-weight rider on a 250F or 450 with a normal tube. Tyre makers publish their own ranges and they differ by a few PSI (Mitas, for example, quotes 10–12 PSI for hard terrain and 12–14 PSI for soft), so treat these as a place to begin, adjust in 0.5 PSI steps and note what you changed.

    If the sand sits on a hard base, run the higher end of the range rather than the lower — the risk there is a pinch flat or a rim strike, not a lack of grip.

    Lower pressure vs higher pressure

    • Lower PSI: more contact patch, more grip and a softer feel — but more risk of pinch flats, tyre roll and rim damage.
    • Higher PSI: better protection against rim strikes and sharper steering — but a harsher ride and less traction on hard, slick surfaces.

    Adjusting for rider weight

    • Under 70 kg: drop roughly 0.5 PSI from the baseline.
    • 70–90 kg: run the baseline.
    • Over 90 kg: add roughly 0.5–1 PSI, especially at the rear.

    Mousse inserts and heavy-duty tubes

    Mousse inserts do not have a settable pressure. Manufacturers sell them in density grades chosen to emulate a target feel — a standard mousse is usually described as feeling like roughly 13–15 PSI when new — and they get softer as they break down. Replace them once they feel vague or start deforming.

    Heavy-duty tubes let you run marginally lower pressure with less pinch-flat risk, at the cost of a little unsprung weight.

    Check it every session

    Use a decent low-range digital gauge — car gauges are inaccurate at these pressures. Check cold before your first session and again between motos as the day heats up.

    Common questions

    What PSI should motocross tyres be?

    Most motocross riders run 12–14 PSI cold. Hardpack sits at the top of that range, sand and mud towards the bottom, and rocky terrain slightly above it.

    Should front and rear tyre pressures be the same?

    They are usually within 1 PSI of each other. Riders who push the front hard in ruts often run the front 0.5 PSI higher to resist tyre roll.

    Do I set tyre pressure hot or cold?

    Always cold. Pressure rises roughly 1–2 PSI as the tyre heats, so setting hot leaves you under-inflated at the start of the next session.
